Since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, dozens of churches have been bombed, and many believers killed or kidnapped by radical Muslims. Now in a corner of Iraq, one church is thriving as it provides a safe-haven to those fleeing persecution. One morning in Feb. 2008, 21-year-old Karzan Mohammed got a taste of what it's like to walk away from Islam. A few weeks earlier, he had converted to Christianity after he said he saw Jesus in a dream."I was standing on the street talking to my friends, when these four men jumped out of a pickup truck with guns," he remembered. "It happened so quickly."A few minutes later, Mohammed found himself inside a dimly lit prison cage.His family got word of his conversion and alerted authorities."The men threw me up against the cage and started punching me in the stomach, kicking me and hitting me on the head," he said."The guards were yelling and shouting asking me to renounce my faith in Jesus Christ. I said no," Mohammed continued. "They said I had committed a crime by leaving Islam. I told them I would not go back. They kept hitting me."When that didn't work, the guards did more."I was dragged into another cell, hung upside down and electrocuted," Mohammed said.But each time prison guards applied electricity to his body, Mohammed kept confessing the same line."I screamed, 'Jesus loves you, Jesus loves you!' he said.For months they tried to break him, but he would not relent."I smuggled a Bible into the prison and started witnessing to the guards," he said. "Eventually four of them accepted Jesus. But word got out that I was sharing the Gospel and so for weeks I was kept in isolation."The guards finally decided to release him after he endured seven months of almost daily torture. Mohammed says it was nothing short of a miracle.Today in the Northern Iraqi town of Erbil, Mohammed is slowly healing and trying to get his life back together. He's getting some help from one of the fastest growing churches in the city."His parents kicked him out of the house when they discovered he had become a Christian," Hazim Jarjis of Kurdzman Church said. "Mohammed had no place to go and so we took him in."Hazim Jarjis pastors the Kurdzman Church, a thriving congregation that has more than one thousand believers, mostly converts from Islam"The church gave me a place to stay, food to eat and the encouragement to get back on my feet," Mohammed said.As is the case in many Muslim countries today, those who dare to convert away from Islam face intense persecution and in some cases death. And so in Northern Iraq, the Kurdzman Church has become a sort of refuge for those fleeing persecution."We've helped 18 such families this last year. So many of them pay a high price for accepting Jesus. He helped oversee a German shortwave broadcast to the Middle East called Radio Zeesen, which tried to win Arabs and Muslims over to the Nazi cause."Every evening there was this kind of anti-Semitic propaganda in order to influence the mindset of the Arabs. And it was sent not only in Arabic language but also in Persian language and Turkish language." Küntzel said.A faithful listener to the anti-Semitic Persian language programs on Radio Zeesen was a young Ayatollah Khomeini, who would later turn Iran into a Muslim theocracy, which today seeks the destruction of Israel.The Nazi's also gave money to the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. According to Küntzel, "Nazi Germany put all its weight behind the Muslim Brotherhood, in order to support them, in order to strengthen them, in order to get the anti-Jewish message spread in the Arab world. And therefore, they helped them a lot, like a big brother."The Muslim Brotherhood distributed Arabic translations of Mein Kampf. And it is the parent of Muslim terrorist groups like the PLO, Hezbollah, Hamas and al Qaeda.Nazism was also the model for secular nationalists in Syria, Iraq and Egypt. Egyptian Presidents Gamal Abdel Asser and Anwar Sadat were both young members of the fascist, anti-Semitic Green Shirt movement."The green shirt movement in Egypt was pro-Nazi. They had the Nazi salute," Küntzel said.In Berlin, the Mufti hoped to bring the Nazi's Final Solution to Palestine, and was personally responsible for persuading the Nazis not to free 5,000 Jewish children toward the end of the war. The children were sent to death camps instead.After the war, the Mufti faced charges of war crimes, but the Allies feared angering the Arabs, and allowed him to return to the Middle East, where he lived until 1974. Before he died, he handpicked as his successor to lead the Palestinians, a family relative named Yasser Arafat."The Mufti thought that Arafat would be the right guy to lead the Palestinian movement," Küntzel said.Küntzel says parts of Islam were always anti-Semitic, or anti-Jewish. But he says what the Nazi's did export to the Middle East was the view that the world will not be truly liberated until the Jews are dead."If you want to kill any Jew, you go with a suicide belt in the middle of the city, and every victim is a good victim because it's a Jew. This is a Nazi mindset," Küntzel said. "And if you shoot the rockets, nobody knows who will get killed, but if it's a Jew, it's always good. It does not matter who he was, what he thinks about politics, what he did in his life. If it's a Jew, he or she has to be killed," he added.The Nazis believed Jews controlled America. Osama bin Laden says the same thing. Portions of the charter of the Palestinian terror group Hamas read like Mein Kampf, essentially blaming the Jews for everything evil."In former times, every Jew was considered to be evil. But now, with modern anti-Semitism, every evil was deemed to be Jewish. Muslims believed Jews were 'losers', according to Koran. The Germans exported the view of Jews as controlling the world. Therefore, now to liberate the world, you have to get rid of the Jews," Küntzel said.Israel now watches as Iran seeks a bomb it can use to erase the Jewish state in order to create what it believes will be a better world. The question that arises here is: What should we contemplate and think about? Firstly, to contemplate about the creations of Allah (SWT). How many a sign there is in the heavens and the earth that they pass by while they are disregardful of it. (12:105) Contemplating on the creations of Allah (SWT) has many advantages. One of the most important things is that that it leads us to recognize our Creator. If we recognize Him, we will obey Him; And if we obey Him, we will achieve success in this world and in the Hereafter. [Miqdad was one of the close friends of Imam Ali (as). Once he heard a companion of the Holy Prophet (saww) saying that the Holy Prophet (saww) has said: Contemplating for an hour is better than the worship of one year. He then heard another companion saying that the Holy Prophet (saww) has said, Contemplating for an hour is better than seven years of worship. He then again heard from the third companion saying that the Holy Prophet (saww) said, Contemplating for an hour is better than seventy years of worship. Not knowing which Hadeeth was true, Miqdad came to the Holy Prophet (saww) and informed him of the three different versions of his Hadeeth that was being quoted by his companions. The Holy Prophet (saww) informed him that all the three are correct. In order to prove his point, the Holy Prophet (saww) summoned all the three men. He (saww) asked the first, How do you contemplate? He said, Allah says in Quran: Indeed in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alteration of night and day, there are signs for those who have intellects. (3:191) I too, ponder over the wonders of the heavens and the earth. The Holy Prophet (saww) told him, One hour of your contemplation is better than the worship of one year. Then he (saww) asked the second man as to how he contemplated. The man said, I reflect upon death and the horror of Qiyamah. The Holy Prophet (saww) told him, One hour of your contemplation is better than the worship of seven years. He (saww) then asked the third man about his contemplation. The man said, I reflect upon the fire of hell and its dreadfulness and severity. The Holy Prophet (saww) told him, One hour of your contemplation is better than the worship of seventy years.] (Tafseer Rooh al-Bayaan) Imam Jaffar as-Sadiq (as) has said, Extensiveness in prayers and fasting is not the worship, rather extensiveness in contemplation is true worship.
